Getting a Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 while you can?

Hi All,

I just finished a short blog post on my watch blog site. I was wondering if you guys agree with me on this one: Get a Rolex Sea-Dweller (16600 or older) while you can, and let the Deep Sea to the guys who have everything already (always with a smile)

Nice story RJ, I think the 16600 looks a lot better than the DeepSea.
The prices for the 16600 will definitely go up, but I don' think we get a in between SD model .

The history as real Tool-watch for COMEX is the key difference between SD and DS.

Well, I would opt for the Triple-Six for the old ones. As for the DS, keep in mind that the SD was considered a huge and clunky watch in former times. So who know what later generations (the ones with the superdeveloped left arm ) are going to say about the DS

interesting blogs thanks for posting, and 100% agree, old 16600 was a fine looking watch, SDDS is just an ugly monster

RJ - I too am with you. I tried on the SDDS in Tokyo last year and it just didn't appeal to me in the least.

In the short term you may be correct about the values of the older 16600. BUT, could the SDDS be another Cosmograph? Recall that back in the 60's, dealers just about couldn't give Cosmographs away....nobody liked them, and they were sold in small numbers....and we all know what happened with Cosmograph values....

Could be. Same probably goes for the Explorer II (Freccione) and the old Milgauss. However, I also would have thought that the Oyster Quartz watches would get their fame once the production had stopped... Hard to guess here. How about the Yacht-Master? Now relatively unpopular...

Got my 16600 back today from cologne. I ve never felt attracted by the SDDS or any other new model.
The tendency of the resell value isn't important for me, I just like the old, clean design.

I must admit that I do like the SDDS, ...only thing that keeps me from buying it is the bracelet, it's just too 'skinny' for this size!! I'm not disturbed by the text on the ring.

I think John has a point and the SDDS could be a next 'wannahave', in a couple of years time! Sea-dwellers always have been proven to be collectors watches, but only realy recognized after a couple of years... we'll see what happens!

Until then, I will keep collecting the oldies!

I've seen your DRSD on the fora, have you sold it John? What about the 16600, the classic dweller 'to be' ...still own that one?

Alas, yes - both SD's have found new homes. The DRSD just didn't "click" with me - I seem to be less of a vintage guy and really prefer the more modern white gold marker models.

As far as the 16600 goes, as much as I loved the watch, I really only wore it evenings and weekends. I mostly wear suits during the day, and the extra case thickness made it less practical to wear with a suit than the 16610. I had the 16600 for about 5 years and really enjoyed it.
