Looks interesting, a bit like some watches of Angular Momentum.

Not exactly what I would like to wear, but interesting....

Mokume Gane - is the name of the technique. It's an ancient japanese way of decorating metal surfaces. The name means - roughly translated - "Wood-grain Metal"

The production technique is similar to damask steel - the main difference is the variety of metals used. For damask steel you only use steel of different kind, since the desired effect was an increase of rigidity and flexibility - the emphasis was originally not on the optical effect. Mokume Gane only aims for the optical effect and can be made with all sorts of metals and alloys, such as copper, brass, silver and gold.

Basically, you solder different sheets of metal to a block and forge, bend, cut and grind it into the desired shape and structure. By forging and shaping the block, the different patterns mix and mingle, thus creating an interesting optical effect. An expert can actually control the appearance of the pattern by skillfully combining different shapes and sizes of raw metal and of course by knowing how to shape the block.

The colour and surface texture comes from treatment with certain acids, since every metal shows a different colour when exposed to e.g. citric acid et al. Also, the acid is responsible for creating the relief surface, since precious metals are not harmed by acid and will remain solid, whereas non-precious metals will corrode and leave distinctive linings on the surface.

Astonishing technique - only an expert can master it and the manufacturing of such a dial takes ages.
    Beste Grüße, Tobias
