Hi Thomas,

das ist der ursprüngliche Märchen-Text aus 1999!

Hier ein späterer Kommentar dazu von JD vom Feb 2004 - versteckt im französischen Timezone-Bereich:

This is a bit of a minefield which I researched about 5 years ago for an article I wrote for a Japanese magazine. The link below is to a shorter version of the article.

My understanding is that the white dial GMTs were made at the very end of the 6542 production run, not early in the run; which would explain the 1958 date.

I have only ever handled one white dial 6542 and it did NOT have an engraved back; the existence of these watches & the correctness of the one I handled were both verified by someone who had worked in the "special products" workshop at Rolex in the 1950s & 60s. What was interesting about this watch was that it had not been "babied" and had had both the bezel & hands replaced over the years. What convinced me the watch was 100% was the fact that I bought it from a London dealer for almost nothing as he was sure the dial was refinished & the watch had an incorrect bezel.

I wish there were more of them around so that I could handle a few & get a "feel" for them, like Mil Subs or COMEX watches. Right now I would be very frightened if one of these turned up as I would not feel confident to say whether or not it was real.
