Company started by George Lucas which, among other things, regulates and licenses THX for in-home and movie theater use. Lucasfilm, led at the time by Thomlinson Holman, devised the idea for THX in order to improve the sound and picture quality of movie theaters.

The movie theater effort has expanded into the home creating Home THX. The idea is to create a set of standards to recreate in the home the same experience a movie director had (and intended) on the mixing stage. Lucasfilm requires manufacturers who seek THX certification for their products to meet certain criteria with the products. THX licensed installers are trained by Lucasfilm at Skywalker Ranch in California on the intricacies of Home THX and how to achieve the optimum sound for a given home theater.

In addition to its THX undertakings, Lucasfilm also runs Industrial Light and Magic (ILM ? a major Hollywood special effects house), a software arm, a THX software certification program, and more.
