Yes, this topic has been discused a couple of times in this forum. It also happened to myself a couple of years ago (=> Attention: German language threat!).

My personal solution is to keep my watch(es) in locked hand luggage.
As soon as anybody wants to see what's in there, they need me to open the case and I can keep an eye on my belongings...
