Compared to the first gen device, the build quality is a bad joke! Iīm pretty disappointed. Clearly a step backwards in my opinion!

I recognise the watch and pen, but what does the black thing do?

Technology has prematurely aged me....

Perhaps the US models are of a slightly different specs, but I'm quite happy with mine in all regards. They don't have the aluminum backs, but that's the only difference I can find between 3G and first gen.

The black thing is to call dealers to buy more watches and pens.

They are the same John in the US and in Europe.
If you run your fingers across the sides of the case where the plastic back meets the silver frame you can feel it is by far not as smooth as my older first gen. iPhone. If you press on the joint of the two parts you can actually feel that you can dent the plastic back a little bit. I honestly believe the older one to be more rugged and durable, but only time will tell.
The "touch" of the older iPhone is way better in my opinion. It just feels much more solid for me - but then hey: thatīs just me !

I suppose...but perhaps your sample size (one of each model) should be expanded a bit before any solid conclusions can be made. :D

Thatīs right - but one the other hand my findings onthe 15 or so Iīve handled so far of the new 3G model have been the same.
Iīm not saying itīs a bad device ore poorly built - the older one is just a bit better. They had to cut the costs of each unit after all because itīs only half the retail price of the first gen. iPhone now.
However, it is a nice toy after all and I just love to play around with the thing!
