Greetings folks - this Spring, I've spend considerable time (and unfortunately money too....) in tracking down the accessories which would have originally come with my 1970 1680. I had to buy a correct box (inner and the outer "seahorse" box, an anchor, a vintage style chronometer tag, and perhaps the rarest vintage sub accessory of all, the coveted triplock hang tag. :gut:

Congratulations on this now very complete set. Especially the Triplock hangtag is a unique and beautiful find.
And now tell me - honestly - was it worth it to fork together all this cash for these little gadgets in your opinion?

Please donīt get me wrong, I really love this set and the watch is just beautiful - but you get to wear only the watch and not the accessories right ( At least in public that is - without other people reacting strangely :D :D :D :D )

John, congrats on completing your set! What a wonderful watch ... :verneig:

The thing I'm still looking for - to complete mine - is a matching green wallet, with the translation booklet (also for my 1665)!
I find the triplock tag a bit too expensive...

His older red brother sends his best regards! :gut:

I'll say yes, and for four reasons:

1. ROI - The return on investment potential is quite high here. The accessories were expensive, but continue to rise in value, and added greatly to the value of my Sub as a "package."

2. The hunt was fun - it was quite a challenge securing these items.

3. They look REALLY good in my curio cabinet. :gut:

4. The satisfaction of owning a *complete* red Sub. A red 1680 is a rare bird, but a complete one truly is scarce. :D

Hi John,
congratulations for completing the package of your 1680 and I can imagine, that is was really a hard work.

Very rare and most interesting is the Triplock-crown hang-tag, which was probably only submitted with watches sold in the years 1972 and 1973 for promoting the new Triplock-crown introduced 1972. Here are some additions from an AD-information about the new Triplock-crown dated January 1972:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/MatthiasRBO/watches/Triplock-2N.jpg

(Source: unfortunately unknown)

Maybe now the question raises up, whether a watchcase with a serialno. 287xxxx (manufactured in 1970 or early 1971) can be fitted originally with a Triplock-crown, which was introduced only 1972. To my opinion this is possible, as the Triplock-crown also fits to earlier manufactured watchcases (see above AD-information). Even if the watchcase was manufacured in 1970/71, your watch may be assembled in Geneva 1972 and was then fitted already with the new Triplock-crown. The watch was then sold only 1973, which is also not surprising, as the Rolex-professional models werenīt bestsellers at that time and the watches were resting for some months (or longer) at the dealers waiting for a buyer.

Another interesting detail: The early Triplock-crowns do not have the additional gasket on the tube of modern Triplocks.

Best Regards
Matthias

Please enlighten me. A couple of other items come to mind as possibilities, but I was told, based on the production year, the items I've assembled are correct for my watch.

John, I think Sharkman means that the little green hangtag with Submariner written on it is missing, that is my best guess?

And there is more than the Sportsfolio booklet...

The one pager flyer:

Nearly nobody knows this flyer as it is super-rare ;)

Marko - that doesn't look like something that would have been included with a Submariner when it was sold new - more like some piece of dealer marketing material. :grb:

Neat though!

ehemaliges mitglied

Sure it is marketing material, like the sportsfolio booklet, which also wasn't part of the delive3ry, but you might rate these two as part of the decision process before buying the watch :D
So a must for a collector - happy hunting!

Bye

Yes, I meant the Oyster Swimpruf tag, is that right? The Sportsfolio could also be a possibility?
