I'm a big fan of Steve. I'm happy to have the Mcqueen Monaco in my collection.
I hope to own a 1655 someday to complete my Mcqueen watch collection.

I've still not seen any pictures of Steve wearing an Explorer, but lots wearing a submariner, is the connection to the explorer II actually correct??

hi
some info:

Interestingly, in real life, Steve McQueen never really wore the Explorer II [ref. 1655], but rather the Rolex Submariner [ref. 5512], which nonetheless featured a very similar design to the Explorer II [ref. 1655]. The Submariner [ref. 5512], however, was only available exclusively in the UK (produced from 1959 through 1978). It seems reasonable to assume that this McQueen connection (discovered through media photos etc) was what inspired the naming of the later internationally released Explorer II [ref. 1655] as the 'Steve McQueen Rolex.'

so wy the 1655 is called steve mc queen?
for me, there are 2 watchs the heuer and the 5512

You will find a lot of pics in this thread

Steve McQueen and his Rolex... (http://www.r-l-x.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=69297&sid=&hilight=Steve+McQueen)

but this sounds very strange:

I suppose must of the members will not agree, concerning similarity between 5512 and 1655 :grb:

In my opinion or as far as i am informed, you are absolutely right, lars.

In deed nobody in the forum does exactly know where the saga of Steve an the 1655 has its origin.

The 1655 model is also connected with the name of Gregory Peck.

And some suggest, that it could also be named "Reinhold Messner".

At least there is a documentation with photography ;)

Hi JB,

Matthias
