I'm new to this forum but I've been arouns uite a lot on other watch websites.

Yesterday I searched on all treads onthis site concerning the 168000 because I'm intrested in this piece. Looks like this is the reference most Rolex owners or collectors don't even know.

2 people did agree on the rarity of this watch. One of them (Kristian)claimed it was in production for only about 9 months while another said it was longer in production 3 or maybe 4 years.

The last person showed a picture with a early 9 million number which would mean that it was made in 1985.
Kristian replied and begun talking about fake extra zero ...

I would want to know if somebody has a 16800 wit a serial number between 9.xxx.xxx and 9.750.xxx

Maybe not all subs from 85 till 89 had the extra zero. Maybe only 10 or 15 % were 168000, and the rest were normal 16800

Or Kristian is right and they were only produced 9 months.


Anyway, it is a very rare reference number.


I made a poll on another forum and asked which Rolex date the people had.

This was the result
1680 white 7 = 11%
1680 red 13 = 21%
16800 5 = 8%
168000 1 = 2%
16610 lug holes 13 = 21%
16610 without lugholes 24 = 38%


Conclusion, IT IS VERY RARE

Die 168000 dürfte 2 Jahre lang gebaut worden sein.

I have a 168000 in my small collection, the no. is R5xxxxx and its from 1987. the nine month period seems to be the most common theory, but it is Rolex, so nobody knows for sure!
I have seen pieces with 9mio no, since the production of 168000 was 1987 and th echange in the system occurred in the same year this makes sense...

The additional Zero engraved in the case is normally easy to spot, since it is quite different from the original factory job. Most of the times it is not even with the other numbers, deeper and the edges are not as smooth... take your time to look at it closely!

there are a few around these days, prices vary from 3200 to 3600 euros even without papers, but as usual demand creates the market and people are ready to part for certain prices...

I am somewhat puzzled why a 9 million Rolex would be dated to 1985? And R-serial to 1987. Pls. fill me in here, have I totally misunderstood Rolex and the catalogues?

As far as I know: The 16610 was introduced in 1989, the 168000 was the transitional between 16800 and 16610. R-serial was introduced in 1989. From my info directly from Rolex Geneva the 168000 was in production between medio 1988 and early 1989. The first generation 16610 had pre-fix "R"...as the next had L...as in R...L...E...X...(no O-series).

My first 168000 was 9 mill complete with papers dating from Danish AD from 1988. My current is early R-serial, however without papers.

I quote from one of many subjects on the 16610 intro:

"in 1989, the Submariner Date received its last update, and became the reference 16610 (still in use as the current Submariner Date in 2005). "

solche aussagen sollten genau überlegt sein...wenn man sich nicht sicher ist, lieber nix sagen, noch dazu wenns um ein angebot aus dem SC hier geht und ein member betroffen ist...gäbe ja auch die möglichkeit sowas per PN nichtöffentlich zu diskutieren...

Which sub date do you have (more than 1 answer must be possible)
I'm pretty sure that more people have a red sub than a 168000

The 168000 is imo very, very rare.

The only problem is that you can't see it's a 168000 without removing the bracelet.
People are willing to pay more for a red sub because everybody can see the red writing. This is imo pure snobbism.
Nothing wrong with the red sub ofcourse but if it comes to rarity the 168000 might be more important.

Talking about red writing ... Within I few days I'll have a 5513 gold writing "gilt dial' with a little small gilt line under the word submariner.
Pretty rare too
